About the building
Ace Hotel Sydney is the first Ace Hotel in the southern hemisphere. Rising 18 storeys, the 257-room hotel includes a lobby bar, ground-floor restaurant and laneway cafe, as well as its crown jewel, the rooftop restaurant and bar Kiln.
The eclectic design of Ace Hotel Sydney celebrates the site’s rich history. It’s the site of Australia’s earliest kiln discovery, dating back to the 1820s, when convict potter Jonathan Leak and his wife, Mary, produced pottery, bricks and more. Tyne House was built in 1916 and served as a dispensary and warehouse for Washington H Soul Pattinson & Co. It later became a garment factory and then an independent high school.
Bates Smart restored the nine-storey Federation warehouse building. The Chicago-style architecture inspired the design of the modern steel-and-glass tower that sits alongside the original building and rises nine storeys above it.
Flack Studio designed the interior of Ace Hotel Sydney as a deep homage to Australia, its boundless and edgy creativity, and the warm, cinematic colour palette of the landscapes. The interior also showcases Australian artists, designers and artisans, with objects and artworks, and an art program curated by Flack Studio.
Perched on the 18th floor of Ace Hotel Sydney, Kiln is an evocative expression of Australia and Surry Hills, brought to life through an alchemy of materials and influences. Designer Fiona Lynch Office was inspired by Australian landscapes and craftsmanship, sourcing almost all of the materials locally.
