This architectural landmark and workplace is a striking combination of form, function and sustainability

About the building
One Shelley Street is a striking landmark and workplace. Fitzpatrick + Partners designed the commercial building, which opened in 2009, with Australia’s first external diagrid structure – both an architectural statement and an engineering solution. Encompassing the building’s sleek glass facade, the diagrid structure eliminates the need for perimeter columns and maximises the flexibility of the internal floor space.
Clive Wilkinson Architects and Woods Bagot custom-designed the interior and workplace for Macquarie Group’s Sydney headquarters. It celebrates collaboration and transparency with a series of meeting pods that project into the ten-storey atrium. The glass-enclosed pods are a nod to dockside cranes and shipping containers. The atrium is linked at different levels by bridges, stairs and open floor levels, and an internal ‘street’ through the length of the building.
One Shelley Street boasts a globally leading 6 Star Green Star rating, has been net zero since 2024, and is powered entirely by renewable energy and onsite solar. It will be fully electric by mid-2026. It also uses revolutionary technologies, including harbour water cooling, chilled beams and zone-controlled lighting.
One Shelley Street has recently undergone a significant refurbishment, unveiling a revitalised arrival experience that redefines first impressions. The redesign includes a dynamic new entry point, new retail, enhanced end-of-trip amenities and a vibrant ‘third space’ designed for connection and comfort. At level 1, called ‘The Street’, the space includes a striking three-storey digital screen and a reimagined landscaped and modern communal zone, fostering a sense of community and shared experience.
