About the building
This year marks the centenary of the Art Deco movement, which emerged at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris in 1925. This significant occasion invites us to rediscover the enduring appeal of Art Deco through one of Australia’s finest expressions of the style: the Anzac Memorial, designed by pioneering architect Charles Bruce Dellit and accomplished sculptor Rayner Hoff.
Opened in 1934, the Memorial is a strikingly symmetrical structure that blends traditional Gothic elements, such as buttresses, cathedral windows and soaring ceilings, with the bold geometry and stylised elegance of Art Deco. It stands as both a place of remembrance and a masterpiece of design.
In 2018, the Centenary Extension was completed, fulfilling Dellit’s original vision while introducing new exhibition and education spaces. The extension reflects Dellit’s design philosophy of ‘truth is beauty’ through its honest use of materials: precast concrete, stone, glass, timber and bronze. Every element is crafted with clarity, restraint and reverence for the original.
